Churros con Manjar
Churros are a delicious dessert that is made in most Latin American countries, with some variations, for the ones that had never tried this dessert, a “Churro” is a fried dough (something like a donut but with no yeast), it is usually shaped is a tube and in some countries is stuffed with “dulce de leche”
When I was in high school there was a street vendor that sold Churros, he came every day at the same hour and sold Churros after school, his churros were particular because they looked like sausage rings, it was crazy sweet and it was cheap, (no wonder why everyone loved it).
My mom was the kind of overprotective mom, she made sure I got a lunchbox full of food so I hardly ever got to eat anything “unhealthy”, eating churros for me was something special, and making this dessert now bring backs some good memories.
What is the meaning of Churro?
in my country “Churro” is slang for handsome, I don’t think they look handsome however Churros sure taste sweet.
Can this be stored?
Once you make the dough can last up to 4 days on your fridge.
What are the “key ingredients”?
Flour (any kind of flour or a mix of flours), Butter (regular Butter, shortening, or other sorts of butter), and something that gets all together like eggs (could be replaced with bananas, yolks only, or other egg replacements)
"Churros con Manjar"
Ingredients
- 3 Large Eggs
- 1 cup All-purpose Flour
- 1/2 cup Unsalted Butter about 1 stick of butter
- 1 cup warm water
- 1/3 cup Granulated Sugar
- 1/4 teaspoon Salt table salt
- 1 tsp Vanilla Extract
To deep fry
- Vegetable Oil to deep-fry
To Decorate
- 350 gr Dulce de Leche
- 2 Piping Bags and tips French Star & Bismark
Instructions
- In a pot at medium heat add sugar, water, butter, salt, vanilla, let butter and sugar dissolve then add flour, let it cook for about 8 - 12 min or till the dough is not sticking to the bottom of the pan (the dough shouldn't be too moisty), turn the heat off and set the pot aside for at least 5 minutes.
- Once the dough has cooled a bit, add eggs (one at a time and stir until they are completely integrated), put the dough on a piping bag with a "star" piping tip, and reserve on your fridge, till your oil is hot.
- set your oil temperature at 350 F or 180 C and start piping the churros into the oil, a knife or a scissor is handy when you are making churros. let them get golden then set them aside and make a perforate them in the center with a straw.
- Put the "dulce de leche" in a piping bag then use a long piping tip to fill your churros and enjoy 'em!
Notes
- Some people dust their churros with sugar and cinnamon, I like the idea however I don't like my churros too sweet, that is why I skip this partÂ
- You don't have to stuff them if like something different, melt some chocolate and dip your churros on it.
Ingredients are really easy to get, make sure your eggs are at room temp before using them
making this dessert requires a bit of patience, you can’t rush them otherwise you will end burning your dough
stuffing them is the best part, I love to put a lot of dulce de leche on my churros but you can use fudge, marmalade, nutella, etc.
A dessert that everyone will love, meant to be shared.
