“Feliz 28!” that is what Peruvians say in 28 of July, I passed the last two “28 de Julio” working on different restaurants, that is why I have not been able to write about it, this year is different though.
I am still working but today is my day off and I am really excited to share with you some of the activities we do on this day.
In Peru, every region celebrates in a different way, in Lima (the capital) there is a Parade were different regions display their “unique dances”, the military, police and some politicians also do speeches.
An immense variety of food is sold in specific places since it is a holiday.
Even though every region celebrates in a different way there is something all Peruvians do on that day, they eat a lot.
Families in Peru gather they eat together a variety of dishes and beverages. They talk about them, their plans for the rest of the year and exchange funny stories.Â
I will share below some of the most common recipes Peruvians eat.
Prepared in almost every region of Peru “Seco de Res” is a great dish you can prepare in any season.
“Elixir of Gods” a.k.a Chicha Morada this delicious beverage is my favorite beverage has healthy properties, Chicha Morada goes with almost every single dish, it has the perfect balance between sweet & acidÂ
Tacu Tacu, perfect dish to celebrate, it’s cheap and can be done using leftovers. If you want to eat an easy Peruvian recipe this might be the one.
Papa a la Huancaina, amazing sauce that is prepared in different ways but all of them are just perfect.Â
Jalea Mixta, Perfect dish for the ones that love seafood, just to write about it makes me hungry.
Pollo Saltado & Lomo Saltado, a fusion between Peruvian & Chinese cuisines a classic.Â
Qapchi, a dish from the region of Ayacucho, an amazing dish that shows the variety of flavor Peru has.
Mazamorra Cochina, you can find it in most street vendors, Peru has a variety of desserts that could blow your mind.
In 28 de julio my family used to gather and cook different “Potajes” (dishes). We talk a lot, everyone talked about different topics so it was usually chaos. I love to cook for my family on 28 de Julio and other celebrations there is a soda that is sold all around Peru, you might want to try it, I found it in the USA (I am glad they sell it here) I drink on special days since it reminds me of home. For the ones that can not guess it, I am talking about Inca Kola (the kind chew gum flavored soda)
